Adoption trip - Day 7
Today was basically a "down" day. We opted out of a Kunming city tour so we could stay near the hotel just the three of us. After yesterday's trip to the orphanage and subsequent regression in our relationship with Priscilla, we thought it was best.
She slept pretty well again. I'm impressed. She was not excited to see us when we got her out of her crib. By "we" I mean "Jess". I basically had to stay away from Priscilla most of the day. She'd cry when I got close or looked at her for too long. So Jess had to feed her, play with her, change her, and hold her. I feel like a useless appendage trapped in a small hotel room. Not a great feeling. I did do some laundry in the bathroom sink so that was fun. No it wasn't.
Jess did manage to give Priscilla a bath. She liked it (I think. I wasn't allowed to be in the bathroom with her because she was getting upset).
The day picked up a little when we decided to take a walk downtown and try to locate the local Gap Kids store. We saw an advertisement for yesterday so I spent a few minutes with Apple Maps looking for the exact address. This was our first walking outing so we packed up the diaper bag and Jess put Priscilla in the baby carrier.
The store was inside a western mall approximately a mile away from the hotel. It was slow going since we needed to wait for traffic so we could cross intersections. Jess was a trooper as she walked and shopped with Priscilla strapped to her for several hours. For her part, Priscilla did well and seemed to enjoy being outside amidst the chaos and sunshine.
After a few false starts, we managed to find the Gap store and buy Priscilla some larger clothes. Most of what we brought her is too small since in general, Chinese orphans run small for their age. But not Priscilla, I think she's built like a tank. A super cute tank.
After shopping, we fed Priscilla back at the hotel and then walked to a local restaurant for dinner. Priscilla did really well and when people stared at her she clammed up and didn't like it, so Jess and I figure she doesn't like attention from anyone, not just us. Not that anyone cares, but we had Thai chicken, spicy minced pork with basil, and stir-fried vegetables with oyster sauce. Plus fresh apple juice for Priscilla. Hey, it's our first dinner out just the three of us. :)
After dinner I resumed my space in the corner of the room so Priscilla didn't think I was trying to get too close. Jess convinced her to eat again and then she fell asleep in her lap. Now she's sleeping like a champ in her bed.
I'd desperately like to give her a hug and I'm trying not to get jealous of all the cuddle time Jess is getting. Tomorrow is a new day. Maybe it'll bring a Priscilla smile for me.
