Adoption Day 8
We fly to Guangzhou tomorrow! That's the thing that has me most excited at the moment. I am not sad to say goodbye to this hotel room. It's been fine but we have been camped here for five days and we are looking forward to a change of scenery.
Priscilla had a good day. She's having moments where her guard is down and she becomes a quirky little baby. Jess can make her laugh at times. At other times she reverts back to being very guarded with an expressionless mask on her face that doesn't change, despite what we do.
We got to eat breakfast together which was great. For the past two days Jess and Priscilla stayed up in the room and I brought them back breakfast. But today we all had eggs and coffee together. :)
After breakfast we went with our guide and the other family to see the largest freshwater lake in China, and then to a local restaurant for lunch. The lake was nice because, even though it was threatening to rain (it didn't) there were thousands of seagulls flying around and there was a nice breeze. Priscilla seemed to really enjoy being outside in the baby carrier.
After lunch (more Chinese food, it's starting to get a little old) we came back to the hotel so Priscilla could nap. I went to Starbucks for some coffee and to work for a few hours. When I returned, I expected Priscilla to still be sleeping but I saw Jess and P pacing up and down the 10th floor hallway. Apparently she woke up shortly after I left and wasn't super excited about it. Jess even gave her another bath.
We met once more with David to double-check some of the legalized Chinese paperwork that we'll need in Guangzhou, and then, you guessed it, BACK TO THE HOTEL ROOM to kill more time.
On the plus side, Jess needed to go to the bathroom and I convinced her to give Priscilla to me to hold while she, umm, was occupied. I thought maybe there was a chance she'd be annoyed but not scared (annoyance is better than fear on my Daddy Meter) so I had my phone out ready to photo document the momentous occasion. Well, she was not annoyed. I photo documented it anyway.
On the bright side I did get a smile from Priscilla today. It was in the hotel room and I was working hard to make her laugh while Jess was holding her. And, after many attempts, I did get one smile out of her. It was awesome. I think it was a pity smile but still, it counts.
Before dinner, P (and Jess and I) were getting restless so we turned on an episode of all-Chinese Nihao Kailan. P was pretty entertained by it. Jess and I, not so much.
After our TV fun, we looked for a western restaurant to eat at because we're getting a little tired of Chinese food. Jess and I had heard of several adoptive families breaking down and eating at KFC or McDonalds but we vowed not to do that since we don't eat that crap when we're at home.
We received a tip on Monday about a place called Salvador's Coffee House so we walked in that general direction. It was about a mile down a small, quiet street. When we found it, we looked in the windows and it was full of westerners. Jess and I had marveled at how few non-Chinese people we've seen in Kunming. Well, apparently they've all been hiding out at Salvador's Coffee House.
I had a burrito and Jess ate a Mediterranean bagel sandwich thing. They even had root beer floats on the menu! I love Chinese food but this was such a nice change. Priscilla did well again in the restaurant. She'll only let Jess hold her, but she sat there quietly and eats her snacks. She's definitely better behaved in restaurants than some other Cooper kids I know...
