Looking Outside In

So I've been reading Bill Bryson's book I'm a Stranger Here Myself: Notes on Returning to America After 20 Years Away, and it's interesting to view his perspective as an American who is viewing the U.S. with fresh eyes after 20 years. I find myself easily relating to some of his observations, even though he is two generations older than me, there is a lot we have in common. Plus, he grew up in Des Moines, Iowa so we have that similarity as well.

Interestingly, Bryson's work is way more popular in the U.K. than it is in his native Iowa. It reminds me of some "dorky" people I met when we lived in Beijing, who admitted they could never return to their native country because in China they are basically foreign superstars and in their home country they are as regular as everyone else.

Something to think about.
